AED's (Automated External Defibrillators) are rapidly becomming more popular and are now found in many public facilities.
WHY?
For most victims of a sudden heart arrest, the victims electrical activity in the heart will go into a specific rhythm called ventricular fibrillation. This rhythm doesn't allow the heart to pump, but instead it will just flutter and shake. This rhythm may last for a short period of time after the victim goes unconscious.
The AED is designed to correct this rhythm when applied to a victim that is found unconscious and without a pulse. Studies indicate that if the AED is applied to the victim within the first 1 to 2 minutes of the victim's heart arrest, victim survival rates could be as much as 74%! CPR performed without the AED may be only 12 - 15% victim survival rate.
